Sri Lankan cricket sensation Chamari Athapaththu delivered a stellar performance in the 3rd ODI against South Africa, scoring an unbeaten 195 runs and leading her team to a remarkable victory. Her exceptional batting skills were on full display as she confidently faced the South African bowlers, showcasing powerful strokes and remarkable resilience.

Facing a tough opponent, Athapaththu’s innings became the backbone of Sri Lanka’s batting effort, ensuring a formidable total on the scoreboard. Her unbeaten score proved decisive as Sri Lanka chased down South Africa’s target with conviction.

Athapaththu’s outstanding performance earned her widespread acclaim and reaffirmed her status as a match-winner. Additionally, her teammate Nilashi de Silva’s contribution of an unbeaten 50 runs further strengthened Sri Lanka’s chase, highlighting the team’s depth of talent.

Despite South Africa’s challenging total, Sri Lanka’s batting prowess led by Athapaththu and de Silva proved too strong. Their convincing victory leveled the ODI series and showcased Sri Lanka’s resilience on the international stage.

This win not only boosted Sri Lanka’s morale but also demonstrated their ability to overcome adversity. Athapaththu and de Silva’s partnership exemplified the teamwork and determination that define Sri Lankan cricket, inspiring future generations of cricketers.

ICC Men’s Player of the Month for March 2024 announced

Kamindu Mendis has beat off competition for Ireland pacer Mark Adair and New Zealand speedster Matt Henry to win the ICC Men’s Player of the Month Award for March 2024.

Mendis became the third Sri Lankan after Prabath Jayasuriya and Wanindu Hasaranga to win the Men’s prize. The batter sees this award as a source of inspiration for his future in international cricket.

“I am extremely happy to be named the ICC Men’s Player of the Month, which I consider an inspiration for my international career,” Mendis expressed. “A recognition such as this motivates and makes us as players work more and more to deliver in the middle for the team, country, and fans.

“I also wish the very best for the other two players who were nominated along with me, Mark Adair and Matt Henry, whom I consider excellent players and good competitors.”

It has been a return to remember for the 25-year-old, who came back to the Sri Lanka setup for the first time since 2022. Mendis started the month with 68 runs in the three-match series against Bangladesh, of which 37 came in the second T20I off 27 balls.

He outshone himself in the longer format, delivering an exceptional performance by scoring centuries in both innings of the first Test against the same opponents.

Walking in to bat when Sri Lanka were in big trouble at 57/5, he stitched a massive 202-run stand with Dhananjaya de Silva to take the team to a respectable total of 280. Both the batters got to a century, with Mendis scoring 102.

After skittling out Bangladesh for 188, the duo once again rescued the visitors and cemented their dominance over Bangladesh with individual centuries. Mendis, batting at No.8 with the score at 126/6, crafted a career-best 164 runs adorned with 16 fours and 6 sixes.

In doing so, Mendis become the first player batting at number seven or lower to hit two centuries in a single Test.

Sri Lanka posted 418 and bowled Bangladesh out for 182, winning the match by a massive margin of 328 runs.

Chamari Athapaththu’s destructive half-century, combined with Harshitha Samarawickrama’s unbeaten fifty, propelled Sri Lanka to a momentous four-wicket victory, securing a first-ever series win over the Proteas Women in the third and final T20 International (T20I) held in East London on Wednesday.

Athapaththu blazed 12 boundaries, including seven fours and five sixes, on her way to a 46-ball 73, while Samarawickrama remained unbeaten with 54 runs off 43 deliveries (4 fours, 1 six) during Sri Lanka’s successful chase of South Africa’s total of 155/6, led by captain Laura Wolvaardt’s 56 off 47 balls (8 fours).

In the series decider, South Africa, after losing the toss, was put into bat first. Wolvaardt spearheaded their innings, guiding them to 37/0 in the fourth over. Her opening partner Tazmin Brits (7) then became the first wicket to fall in the contest off the bowling of Sungadika Kumari (3/24).

With Wolvaardt joined by all-rounder Marizanne Kapp, the duo combined to propel the Proteas to 50/1 at the end of the powerplay prior to the latter departing for eight as Udeshika Prabodhani (1/49) completed a simple caught and bowled.

Despite Wolvaardt’s resistance and a partnership with Marizanne Kapp, South Africa stumbled to 65/3 by the ninth over, losing key wickets to Sri Lankan bowlers Udeshika Prabodhani (1/49) and Kaveesha Dilhari (1/22).

Wolvaardt, eventually reaching her half-century, and Anneke Bosch (27) steadied the innings, but Sri Lanka’s bowlers continued to chip away at the Proteas’ lineup. Nadine de Klerk’s (44 off 25 balls) late onslaught propelled South Africa past 150 runs, finishing on 155/6 after 20 overs.

In their chase, Sri Lanka experienced an early hiccup as the in-form Vishmi Gunaratne (1) was dismissed with the first ball of the second over as Wolvaardt took a smart overhead catch off the bowling off Nonkululeko Mlaba (1/26).

The early wicket did little to slow down the subcontinent outfit as captain Athapaththu found her rhythm with the bat quickly to help push her team to 48/1 at the end of the field-restricted overs.

With Athapaththu at the helm, the Sri Lankans quickly advanced to 82/1 after 10 overs, with the right-hander bringing up her ninth career fifty in devastating fashion with two consecutive sixes in the ninth over.

After bludgeoning another six alongside Samarawickrama to help take Sri Lanka into triple figures, Athapaththu’s impressive knock was brought to an end by Kapp (1/24) to conclude the record-breaking 97-run stand. This was before Marx (1/27) picked up the scalp of Dilhari (1) to leave the visitors 114/3 after 14 overs, still needing 42 runs to win.

Despite losing wickets, Samarawickrama’s composed innings, alongside partnerships with Hasini Perera (10) and Nilakshika Silva (12), guided Sri Lanka to the brink of victory. Needing only six runs off 11 deliveries, Sri Lanka secured the win, with Samarawickrama completing the triumph with a winning single with five balls to spare.

Wolvaardt, for her outstanding performances throughout the series, was awarded the Player of the Series accolade after recording a total of 158 runs in two innings at an average of 79.

The three-match ICC Women’s Championship (2022-25) One-Day International series gets underway with the first encounter on Tuesday, 09 April at the Buffalo Park Stadium from 14h00.

Sri lanka’s gunaratne and dilhari combine brilliantly to square t20i series

An undefeated partnership between Vishmi Gunaratne and Kaveesha Dilhari propelled Sri Lanka to a series-levelling victory by seven wickets in the second T20 International (T20I) against the Proteas Women at the JB Marks Oval in Potchefstroom on Saturday.

Gunaratne excelled with a career-best 65* off 57 balls, striking nine fours and one six, while Player of the Match Dilhari played a swashbuckling 28-ball 45 during the successful chase of South Africa’s first innings total of 137/8 after Anneke Bosch led from the front with 50 off 32 deliveries (4 fours, 2 sixes) for the home side.

Choosing to bat first after winning the toss, the Proteas got off to a positive start at the crease as openers Bosch and Tazmin Brits (7) quickly progressed to 26/0 after three overs before Achini Kulasuriya (2/26) made an impact, dismissing Brits who dragged one onto her stumps on her 50th T20I.

Following the early setback, Bosch and the experienced all-rounder Marizanne Kapp began rebuilding effectively, taking South Africa to 48/1 at the end of the powerplay before reaching their half-century partnership for the second wicket.

Shortly after achieving her well-deserved fourth career T20I fifty, Bosch became the second wicket to fall as Dilhari (1/22) finally broke the 58-run partnership, leaving the hosts at 84/2 after 10 overs.

After the crucial breakthrough, Sri Lanka quickly picked up three more wickets as Suneě Luus (3) fell victim to a run-out, and Kapp was caught in the inner ring for 44 off the bowling of Inoshi Priyadharshani (1/21).

Chloeě Tryon (2), Annerie Dercksen (3), and debutant Karabo Meso (0) were also swiftly dismissed as another run out and wickets for Kulasuriya and Chamari Athapaththu (1/18) shifted the momentum of the match in Sri Lanka’s favour, leaving South Africa 118/7 with three overs remaining.

With stand-in captain Nadine de Klerk and Nonkululeko Mlaba (4) at the crease, South Africa eventually posted 137/8 after 20 overs, with Mlaba becoming the last wicket to fall to another run out while de Klerk remained unbeaten on a run-a-ball 16*.

Needing 138 to level the series, Sri Lanka faced a tough challenge in the initial four overs of their chase as South Africa restricted them to 16/0 before seamer Tumi Sekhukhune (1/27) dismissed Athapaththu (6), with Meso taking her maiden T20I catch behind the stumps.

Ending the powerplay on 37/1, young Gunaratne led the charge with the bat, forming a 31-run partnership with Harshitha Samarawickrama (12) to guide Sri Lanka past the 50-run mark after nine overs.

As the partnership gained momentum, Samarawickrama was bowled by Tryon (1/14), followed by de Klerk dismissing Hasini Perera (1), leaving Sri Lanka at 68/3 after 12 overs.

With 70 runs needed off 48 balls for victory, Sri Lanka’s in-form opener Gunaratne was joined by fellow youngster Dilhari. The duo showcased their temperament in a match-winning 76-run stand for the fourth wicket, with Gunaratne reaching her first-ever T20I fifty while Dilhari remained unbeaten on 45*, sealing a convincing seven-wicket triumph in the penultimate over.

The series decider is scheduled for Wednesday, April 3rd, at the Buffalo Park Stadium in East London, starting at 18h00.

World cup focus takes centre stage ahead of T20i series against Sri Lanka

In the build-up to the exciting T20 International (T20I) series against Sri Lanka, Proteas Women captain Laura Wolvaardt laid out the team’s ambitions for the upcoming three-match contest set to be held in Benoni, Potchefstroom and East London from 27 March – 03 April.

The first T20I gets underway on Wednesday, 27 March at Willowmoore Park in Benoni from 18h00 SAST, with the match broadcast live on SuperSport Grandstand (Channel 201). Tickets are available at the stadium or online via TicketPro from R40.

Commenting at the pre-match press conference ahead of the series-opener, Wolvaardt highlighted the significance of the T20I matches against Sri Lanka, in relation to the 2024 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh later this year.

“Very crucial,” the skipper noted. “We don’t have much cricket left as a group before the World Cup, so these three T20Is are very important just to try different combinations and to finalize that starting XI that we’d like to have for the World Cup,”

Despite South Africa holding a stern record against Sri Lanka in T20I cricket, with 10 wins out of 14 matches, the Proteas suffered a narrow three-run defeat the last time these two sides faced off in the first match of the T20 World Cup hosted in South Africa in February 2023.

Taking the opponent’s solid form in the 2023/24 season, Wolvaardt stated; “It’s not a series that we’re taking lightly at all. Sri Lanka has been very good in the past couple of months, beating England as well in the T20I series, so we’re going to be looking to start strong on the front foot.”

After a downward turn in form during the recent multi-format tour to Australia, the 24-year-old opening batter takes a positive outlook into the battle against Sri Lanka after refinding her rhythm with the bat during the Women’s Premier League (WPL) in India earlier this month.

“I didn’t have my best series in Australia, especially in the ODIs and the Test match but I was able to have one or two good knocks in the WPL, so I was very grateful to get a few games over there and just to have fun and enjoy the experience.

“What I did differently, I think not too much, which is what’s probably a bit frustrating from a cricketing point of view, because I feel like I didn’t try too much different, I just had a bad Australian series.

“My focus has been just to sharpen up on some technical things and overall, I am feeling good, feeling fresh and really enjoyed batting again at the WPL, so looking forward to the series,” the captain commented.

With former captain Suné Luus set to break the T20I caps record for the Proteas Women if selected in the first T20I (Mignon du Preez is currently joint-top with Luus on 114 caps), Wolvaardt shared her thoughts on her long-term teammates’ pending achievement and her impact on the team over the last decade.

“That’s an awesome stat. I didn’t know that and to think she’s only 28, so she’ll still be able to get a lot more games. She’s been a part of the side for probably as long as anyone can remember and has been performing well with the bat lately. She’s put a lot of hard work into her batting, especially in the recent off-season. It’s been great to see her sort of reap the rewards in the past couple of games.

“Having captained the side in the past, having that experience and having that many T20Is, helps a lot. With the advice that she can give and the information she can share, it’s been great having her around the group,” she added.
